Usami Renko
The director of the Hifuu Detective Agency, whose offices are located behind Keine's temple school in the human village. A renowned detective with the unusual ability to see her time and place in the night sky. Her name is read in the eastern way, with family name first and written using the kanji for 'outermost' (as in outer space), 'helper', 'seeing' and 'lotus.'
Maéreverie Hearn
The director's assistant and record keeper at the Hifuu Detective Agency. The narrator of these stories, with an eye for discovering boundaries. Her name is written in western order and all but unpronounceable to many Japanese speakers. As such, she often simply goes by 'Merry,' a nickname given to her by Renko.
Hakurei Reimu
The shrine maiden of the Hakurei shrine, sworn to resolve Incidents and exterminate youkai. She is seen as lazy by most and often slow to get involved when strange things start occurring. Her name is written in eastern order, and uses the kanji for 'wisdom,' 'beauty,' 'spirit' and 'dream.'
Kamishirasawa Keine
A were-hakutaku historian who lives in the human village. She wears many hats, acting as a teacher, a member of the village's neighborhood watch, and Renko and Merry's guardian. As a historian, she often works with Akyuu to confirm the long and ongoing chronicle of the village's history. Her name is written in the eastern style with her personal name being pronounced 'kaynay.' Her names are written using the kanji for 'upper', 'white', 'valley', 'intelligence' and 'sound.'
Hieda no Akyuu
The head of the Hieda clan and the ninth Child of Miare. She is a symbolic leader in the human village, but holds little actual power. Her duty is to record the history of this world in the Gensokyo Chronicle. Her name is written in eastern order and links her to the legendary figure of Hieda no Are, the compiler of the Kojiki, an ancient book of myths and history that is seen as one sacred texts of Shintoism.
